In first grade we use the Investigations math program. Our main goal is to implement year-long practice in developing number sense and number concepts using games and assessments to help focus our teaching. Students will hopefully be able to add and subtract within 10 by the end of the year.
Here is what a typical math session looks like. Students will first participate in a classroom routine (counting on a number line, drawing images that represent numbers, tell number stories, etc.). Then students will be introduced to a new concept or game that helps students to practice that new concept. Most of the math session is spent in workshop, where students play games with partners or solve problems independently. Last, our class will discuss strategies or new ideas they learned during workshop.
There are many wonderful resources that provide students with a chance to practice their math skills. I will provide links and apps below to help support your child at home.
For the iPad
10 Frames This game helps students to practice their number sense on a ten frame and practice simple math facts within 10.
Geoboard This app allows students to practice creating triangles and quadrilaterals. They will be familiar with this app because we use it within the classroom.
PBS KIDS This app is great because it engages students in not only fun and engaging games that highlight students' favorites characters from TV shows, but also allows them to practice a lot of the foundational skills in math.
